NYC Scenes: The Gastropub

Bourbon & Bites

The concept of the gastropub is redefining the world’s expectation of “pub grub”. The quality of ingredients, atmosphere, and drinks found in these establishments thankfully allows stale peanuts and flat beer to float into a distant memory of pubs’ past. Similarly, gatropubs are no longer all about the beer, as cocktail menus are welcoming the ever-growing industry of mixology and fine spirits. Talented chefs across New York are bringing together the comfortable atmosphere of the pub with the culinary masterpieces you expect to find in top-rated restaurants. This ambience is a perfect opportunity to enjoy fresh, quality cocktails alongside a delicious selection of small plates and snacks with you closest buddies, or a first date. Any pretension, or disappointment, can be checked at the door. Here are two of our favorites:

The Highlands

150 W. 10th Street, West Village

highlandThe Highlands is a great representation of the small, quaint characteristics of its West Village location. The large front windows are perfect for people watching or enjoying the early evening light. At night, an extensive and unique whiskey menu can be read by candlelight that softens the entire bar and restaurant area. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeably lead you in the direction of delicious whiskey based on your tastes. Unsure of which one to pick? Go with one of their many whiskey flights to sip on with any of their delicious small plates or the incomparable beef wellington.

The Tippler

425 W. 15th Street, Chelsea

The Tippler is an underground hideaway in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood. Situated under Chelsea market, it makes for a perfect ending to a long afternoon braving the market crowds or exploring the nearby Highline. The cocktail list is full of fresh, essential ingredients creatively mixed in exciting new ways. The cocktail flight focuses on three different, all delicious, interpretations of the classic Manhattan. The white bean and tomato toasts are light but satisfying plates to share over conversation on the beautiful décor found throughout the expansive bar. The menu and space would be a welcome environment for a large group of friends or late-night socializing.
